Vlad caught it deftlyin one hand, still keeping his gun trained on the man in front of him. Vladopened the envelope and saw two large bundles of hundred dollar bills. Also included, was a scrap of paper with a name scribbled on it. The manwas watching Vlad intently, as Vlad seemed to ponder something. After afew seconds pause, Vlad said I accept. Vlad returned to his building, waited for the elevator andwent up to his apartment. Now that he had landed a job he had preparationsto begin. He pried aloose floor board up from under his bed, revealing a battered lookingbriefcase. Vlad took hold of the briefcase, lifted it out of the floor andreplaced the board. After opening the case, he methodically checked andcleaned the contents. Once he was satisfied that all was in order, herepacked the case. Next, he went to his closet. He decided on a ve ryordinary looking black blazer, matching pants, and of course, his trademarksunglasses. Vlad smiled as the old adage All dressed up and nowhere togo flashed through his mind. Oh well, he exclaimed no where to go, butonly for the next five hours. Vlad then fell asleep. Precisely two hourslater, Vlad awakened, tidied himself up, washed his face, dressed and lefthis apartment. Three hours to go. Vlad hailed a cab and asked to bedropped at the UN building. Upon his arrival, he found a rooftop fromwhich he could see the front lawn of the building, yet couldnt be seenhimself. Vlad re?opened his briefcase and assembled its contents. Aftersitting this way for about three hours ( it seemed like more, but timemoves slowly even for a professional of his caliber ) he spotted his quarryapproaching. Interview of Insurance Ad annon Interview of an Insurance Field Adjuster As I fumbled through radio stations, the unforgettable memories of a horn blaring, tires screeching, and turning just in time to see a truck smashing into my car came flooding back. Glass shattering, the airbag deploying, I had gasped for breath from the sudden impact. It is sad that most people will have to go through a car accident like this one at least once in their lifetime. Kathy Highland was the insurance adjuster from Shelter Insurance Company who was assigned to my case. Her professionalism, courtesy, and understanding changed this horror story into just another chapter in my life, a chapter which I am now able to look back upon as a valuable learning experience. The morning sun warmed the air that April day. It was Thursday around nine a.m. when I arrived at the Shelter Insurance building. I looked around Kathy's office noticing her diploma from the University of Oklahoma and a couple of certificates for the insurance company hanging on the wall. Directly behind her was a quotation in a small frame. It read, When looking for the reason why things go wrong never rule out sheer stupidity. I asked Kathy what it meant to her. Kathy looked at me and said, People come into my office thinking I have all the answers and I can give them everything they want. It is easy to see that Kathy's knowledge is what people desire. With her professionalism and courtesy she is able to ease the suffering of her clients and not compensate them more than the company is willing to. About that time the phone rang, and she picked it up and said, Kathy Highland. She listened for a few seconds as she tapped her pen on the desk, and finally said, What is the claim number. As if she had done this a million times, Kathy told the person on the phone to go ahead and extend the car rental and then hung up the phone. Clearly Kathy handles her work swiftly and methodically easing the anguish of the ordeal as easy as possible. As I asked Kathy, Where does the claim process begin? She started to explain to me the claim process from beginning to end. First the adjuster will call both parties involved in the accident. Kathy said, This could be the fun part. Most of the time you get two different stories of the accident. Then the adjuster will go to the scene of the accident with the police report to determine what percentage each person is at fault. She said, This is the hard part, trying to imagine the accident happening. By the way that reminds me, I have a case I need to work on today. Would you like to come along? Happily, I said, Yes, so we headed across town to the accident scene. The accident had happened only two days before when. An 82 year old man made a left turn in front of a high school student who had a new Mustang. Kathy said, This case appears to be clear as to who is at fault, but if the student was speeding he could be held partly at fault. The police report stated that the Mustang laid 47 feet of tire marks, 40 of which were before impact and 7 after impact. The police report noted that the older man received a ticket and the student did not. It was clear to me that the older man was at fault. Kathy was still not certain the student was not speeding. After the adjuster has reviewed the police report and the accident scene, she will go to the wrecker yard to appraise the damage of the vehicles. As we pulled into the wrecker yard, I saw all the vehicles as if it was a cemetery of cars and trucks that no one wanted anymore. Kathy, knowing her way around the yard, pointed out the writing on the windshields. Each vehicle had an accident case number in grease pencil written on it. Kathy quickly found the 1979 Delta 88 and new Mustang near the front of the yard. As I walked through the yard, I saw the damaged vehicles. I realized how many lives were lost and changed. The damage was minor on one car and massive on another. As we looked at the Mustang, I saw that it was a total loss and no amount of money or time could restore it. Alessandro Volta - Inventor of the Voltaic Pile In 1800, Alessandro Volta of Italy built the voltaic pile and discovered the first practical method of generating electricity. Count Volta also made discoveries in electrostatics, meteorology and pneumatics. His most famous invention, however, is the first battery. Alessandro Volta - Background Alessandro Volta was born in Como, Italy in 1745. In 1774, he was appointed as professor of physics at the Royal School in Como. While at the Royal School, Alessandro Volta designed his first invention the electrophorus in 1774, a device that produced static electricity. For years at Como, he studied and experimented with atmospheric electricity by igniting static sparks. In 1779, Alessandro Volta was appointed professor of physics at the University of Pavia and it was while there that he invented his most famous invention, the voltaic pile. Alessandro Volta - Voltaic Pile Constructed of alternating discs of zinc and copper, with pieces of cardboard soaked in brine between the metals, the voltaic pile produced electrical current. Economic power asserts a certain level or propriety where knowledge is concerned, but this can be used where context is shown to be essential in learning mathematical knowledge. Putting math into context with real life situations appears to increase the ability to effectively use mathematical knowledge. Socialization appears to be the key to how learning is accomplished and learning math is affected when earlier socialization towards learning intangible concepts has not been established. The effect of economics on the gaps in achievement as observed between low and high income families is more likely due to the differences in socialization towards learning rather than in a disparity in income. There is a belief based upon research that children from African American and Latin ethnic origins, as well as those from low socio-economic areas have lowered scores on standardized tests than to those from Caucasian ethnic origins and with a higher level of socio-economic advantages. According to Flores (2007), â€Å"Specifically, data show that African American, Latino, and low-income students are less likely to have access to experienced and qualified teachers, more likely to face low expectations, and less likely to receive equitable per student funding â€Å" (p. 29). ... In the study done by Flores (2007) who also focuses on socio-economic status, the statistics concerned with ethnicity is also considered. Flores (2007) presents data concerning standardized tests still shows a disparity in regard to ethnicity. In African American students, 91% have not met the mathematics proficiencies expected by the eighth grade. For Latino students that figure is 87%. Asian American students, on the other hand, show that 53% are not meeting mathematical expectations and Caucasian students are at 63%. The first notable information from these statistics is that over half of all students are not meeting mathematical achievement expectations by grade eight. The discussion, when focused on socio-economic backgrounds, shows that while 38% of children from financially secure homes meet expectations in mathematics on standardized tests, only 13% of children from economically insecure families meet those expectations (Flores, 2007). Economic disparities also lead to cultur al disparities with families having members with minds that have been trained academically have a much easier time in transferring that type of learning discipline onto their children.
